Choose legal support around the decisions you need to make. A founder negotiating enterprise contracts has different needs from one completing a familiar formation process. The best brief makes those needs visible before fees are compared.
This guide is general information. It does not recommend a provider or establish a firm's qualification to act.
Write one consistent brief
Describe the business, company jurisdiction, founder and employee locations, immediate task and deadline. Include relevant records and explain any existing dispute or specialist issue.
Ask each provider to respond to the same deliverables: advice, drafting, negotiation, approvals, signing and completion records. A fee for a document review is not directly comparable with a fee for managing the entire matter.
Verify the people and coverage
Identify the legal entity you would engage and the responsible adviser. Check appropriate professional registers for the jurisdiction where regulated legal services will be provided.
For Queensland, the Queensland Law Society maintains a Register of Solicitors. Use the appropriate local register checks rather than relying solely on a website or directory listing. QLS Register of Solicitors.
Ask how overseas or specialist work will be handled and whether other advisers need separate engagements. A provider's online availability does not establish global legal coverage.
Discuss the working relationship
Who receives questions, who makes decisions and who communicates with counterparties? Ask how urgent work is scheduled, how context is retained and when the scope will be revisited.
If the provider uses AI, ask where it helps the process and how relevant legal work is checked. Also request the confidentiality and data-handling terms for your engagement. Avoid treating the presence or absence of AI as proof of quality.
Compare total cost and exclusions
Request fees, taxes, third-party charges, assumptions, revision limits and any recurring commitments. Check what happens when the task changes. Ask whether a fixed fee covers the result you need or only an initial stage.
Consider the operational burden on your team as well as the invoice. Someone must supply facts, approve positions and complete internal actions.
Make a documented choice
Keep the scope, engagement terms and agreed responsibilities together. Record why the provider fits the task and when you will reassess the relationship.
